Thousands in Kuala Lumpur suffered from water cuts due to high demand which pushed the Sungai Langat water treatment plant into overload, Syarikat Bekalan Air Selangor (Syabas) said.


 This is despite the Selangor government not initiating water rationing during this dry season.


 The cuts affected 17,500 users at Jalan Lapangan Terbang, Sungai Besi, Jalan Chan Sow Lin, Jalan Wisma Putra, Jalan Bellamy, Jalan Kerayong, Jalan San Peng, Dataran F&amp;N, Jalan Syed Putra, Taman Seputeh, Taman Segar, Pandan Perdana, Pandan Indah, Taman Kencana, Maju Jaya, Lembah Maju and Taman Tayton View.


 "The cut was due to high water demand which exceeded supply, causing a drop in water levels in the main ponds which feed the Sungai Langat treatment plant...


 "Treated water in Selangor, Kuala Lumpur and Putrajaya is not enough as a whole with the treated water reserves is lower than 1 percent or in the negative at peak hours, so Syabas cannot provide alternate supply to the affected areas," communications director Priscilla Alfred said.


 She said that for the time being, water tanks will be on stand by to make emergency runs while static water tanks will be prepared.


 She also advised unaffected users to use water judiciously so that the affected areas can receive regular supply as soon as possible.


 Selangor Menteri Besar Abdul Khalid Ibrahim had promised there will be no water rationing in Selangor during the dry season, after months of rationing in the state earlier this year.


 Khalid said the state will source water from former mining ponds to ensure that the dams do not fall below critical levels, but critics have questioned if the water is safe for consumption.

This is despite no rationing, as reserves of below 1 pct can't cope with demand.
