As the special task force investigating 1MDB comes under attack, with allegations that it was out to overthrow the government, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department Paul Low promised to defend its members.

The special task force, comprising the police, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission and Bank Negara, is also investigating claims that RM2.6 billion was deposited into Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak's personal bank accounts.

"I was brought into the federal cabinet specifically to promote good governance and to strengthen transparency and accountability in the government.

"In line with this mandate, I wish to assure the public that I continue to stand firm in protecting these institutions and their respective officers, and will see to it that they are allowed to conduct the investigations until a satisfactory conclusion is reached," Low said in a statement today.

He also called on members of the public to support these institutions.

'Nation facing unprecedented challenges'

"The challenges that we are currently facing as a nation are unprecedented and it is of prime importance for all of us - especially the rakyat - to support these key institutions and to ensure that their independence and professionalism continue to be safeguard at all costs," he said.

Low said he was concerned with the numerous comments relating to the 1MDB probe by the special task force.

"These comments seem to indicate that there are certain parties attempting to hamper the efforts of the task force in carrying out its investigation.

"Uncovering the truth with regard to the various allegations directed at 1MDB is of utmost importance, both in the interest of the government and the nation as a whole," he said.

Low said the institutions involved in the ongoing investigation are duty bound to carry out their responsibilities independently, transparently and without fear and favour.

He added that where there is sufficient evidence of wrongdoing according to law, the institutions must ensue that charges will duly be brought against anyone involved.
