Najib strikes back; mufti paints targets amid IS murder call; Brexit shock

KINI ROUNDUP | Here are the key headlines from yesterday you may have missed, in brief.

Emboldened Najib strikes at enemies within

Umno president Najib Abdul Razak moved against his opponents with the supreme council sacking Umno deputy president Muhyiddin Yassin and supreme council member Mukhriz Mahathir from the party.

Emboldened by a recent string of election victories, Najib also moved to cut funding from former premier Dr Mahathir Mohamad's Perdana Leadership Foundation.

However, Mahathir said he had no qualms over the funding cut. He, however, said he feared for the future of the country.

Mufti declares ‘kafir harbi’ amid IS' murder call

Pahang mufti Abdul Rahman Osman courted controversy after he declared DAP as "kafir harbi" - non-believers who can be killed for waging war against Islam - just a day after the Islamic State (IS) called on its allies to kill non-believers in the country.

This prompted Selangor DAP committee member Edry Faizal Eddy Yusof to question if BN parties that opposed hudud would also be declared as non-believers who can be slain.

In response, an undaunted Abdul Rahman said he was not only referring to DAP but all non-believers who oppose Islam.

The comment even prompted rival MCA to come to DAP's defence with its religious harmony bureau chief, Ti Lian Ker, accusing the mufti of fuelling the IS' fire.

Meanwhile, MCA Youth chief Chong Sin Woon asked PAS to state its stand on the IS' call to kill non-believers in the country.

In a related development, inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar is unfazed by IS' vow to “slaughter” the Royal Malaysian Police. The police chief challenged Malaysian members of the terrorist group to return home, instead of issuing threats from afar.

Brexit sends shock waves

United Kingdom voted to exit from the European Union, a move dubbed as Brexit, sending shock waves across the world.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak was quick to assure that Malaysia is prepared to face any global economic uncertainty as a result of Brexit.

Meanwhile, International Trade and Industry Minister II Ong Ka Chuan added that country's trade will not be significantly affected by Britian’s exit from EU.
