Eight people were injured in an explosion at the front porch of a nightspot in IOI Boulevard in Puchong early this morning.

Selangor deputy CPO Abdul Rahim Jaafar is reported as saying that the incident occurred about 2.15am.

Rahim also confirmed that the explosion was caused by a hand grenade and that police were searching for the person who threw it into the bar and lounge.

The police forensic unit has carried out its investigation at the site, he said.

It was reported that some 20 patrons of the establishment were watching the Euro 2016 football match between Spain and Italy when the explosion occurred.

Puchong Fire and Rescue Department chief of operations Mohd Hisam Mat Yasih said that a distress call was received about 3am.

A security guard working at the area said he saw smoke billowing from the nightspot after the explosion.

Five of the injured are receiving treatment at the Serdang Hospital and three more have been sent to the Sunway Hospital, Rahim said.

"A car which was parked about 30 metres from the premises was damaged in the incident," he told reporters at the scene where a police forensic unit team was seen carrying out an investigation.

According to Bernama, the police are tracing the suspect.

Meanwhile, DAP's Puchong MP Gobind Singh Deo urged the police to act fast and keep people informed of developments in the probe and ascertain the real reasons behind it as soon as possible.

"Although the police say it is not an act of terror, I think the police should nevertheless also tell us if there is any remaining security threat against the people of Puchong or elsewhere following this incident and how it should be dealt with, if that be the case.

"I hope to meet with the OCPD to discuss matters further as soon as possible," Gobind said.
