The United States Embassy in Kuala Lumpur has reminded its citizens of the need for caution and awareness of personal security while traveling in Malaysia.

This security message to its citizens was published on the embassy's website two days ago, in view of the Malaysian authorities which have confirmed links between the Islamic State (IS) and the explosion at a nightclub in Puchong, as well as other recent incidents in Bangladesh, Turkey, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Indonesia.

In the past, terrorist organisations have on occasion planned their attacks to coincide with significant dates on the calendar, said the embassy.

"At present, the US Embassy is not aware of any specific terrorist threat to US citizens in Malaysia.

"US citizens should remain vigilant at all times while travelling; US citizens overseas may be targeted by extremist groups, regardless of the country they are in."

It advised its citizens to review personal security plans, remain aware of surroundings, including local events, and to monitor local news stations for updates.

"Maintain a high level of vigilance, take appropriate steps to enhance your personal security and follow instructions of local authorities," the embassy said.

Police have confirmed that there were IS elements involved in the grenade blast at the Movida nightclub in Puchong.

Inspector-general of police Khalid Abu Bakar said 15 people have been arrested in connection with terror-related activities.

Of those arrested, two of them were related to the Puchong attack, Khalid said.

The attack on Movida, which occurred in the wee hours of the morning, left eight people injured. The police initially ruled out terrorism, saying it could be a gang-related attack.

However, a Facebook user, linked to IS militant Muhamad Wanndy Muhamad Jedi, posted that IS was responsible for the attack.
