YOURSAY | ‘We have horrible public transport, and they want us to use it.'

Parking fees in KL's central business district up 150pct from today

Gunnerrun: In many countries where the comparisons are made, although the parking fees are higher, this is acceptable because their average income and spending power are higher.

It is not true that traffic eases only during Hari Raya or other festivities. The reason why on most days the jams are bad everywhere is because a lot of parents drive their children to and back from schools every day.

The traffic is very much less busy during school holidays and this is a known fact. Increasing the parking rates and encouraging car-pooling and taking public transport will not work, because car-pooling has been promoted heavily before and it had failed miserably.

As for the additional and new rail services such as LRT and MRT, the problem is they lack sufficient parking spaces at the outskirts and these services do not bring a passenger right to the doorstep of the office.

This parking fees hike is just another ploy to increase the income for the government at the expense of the rakyat to settle unscrupulous debts.

Anonymous 2414361461045676: The authorities only find ways to milk money from us. Please resolve the root problems, and understand why we prefer to drive instead of taking public transport.

Infrastructure should be planned in advance. If your plan is not effective, then what? To us, it means the cost of living keeps increasing, but the problem remains unresolved.

Only Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL) revenues increase, which your boss desperately needs to cover the hole in the finances.

Xiao Zhu: Our public transportation is one of the worst. For those getting on any LRT (light rail transit) midway station during peak hours, how many minutes do we spend waiting because the trains are packed?

Go learn from Japan how they synchronise the train in order for those in midway stations for people to get on it. We have a poorly managed public transport system, yet the citizens are punished for it.

Tpn: These people do not use their brains (if they have any) when making decisions. Ask the Federal Territories minister and Kuala Lumpur mayor to take the bus when going to work.

We have horrible public transport, and they want us to use it.

Basically: Firstly, if this happened in Selangor or Penang, BN leaders would scream bloody murder that Pakatan Haparan doesn't care about the rakyat.

Secondly, who is primarily responsible for the traffic jams in Kuala Lumpur if not DBKL (and their new master plan wanted to cram millions more into the city), and the parked crony buses and taxis that clog up half the road, and turn three-lane roads in the CBD

like Jalann Bukit Bintang and Petaling Street into single lane roads.

Anonymous_1371692684: So Bangsar, Solaris Mont Kiara, Taman Tun Dr Ismail (TTDI) are now part of the central business district? What a joke, they are mostly residential areas.

Parking has long been a problem there. But there is no public transportation to these places. One bus every 30 minutes is not public transportation.

Most likely, it's good for Uber, because no one would use crooked taxis anyway.

Anonymous_4031c: Since when is Solaris Mont Kiara, Sri Hartamas and TTDI part of the city centre?

The increase for these areas is not justified as there is no rail system running through these areas except for TTDI.

An increase in parking fees in the KL city centre may be justified, but the suburbs do not deserve the increase. It's more hardship for the rakyat.

SSG: I give due respect for the authorities to increase revenue for the government in this way.

At the same time, try your best to do away with exorbitant charges on new cars. The AP (approved permit) system only benefited a few chosen ones.

Try also to look into proper town planning. When a permit is given to build a huge multi-storey building, try to make sure that the roads leading to and fro can withstand the traffic. So build the roads first before building the huge buildings.

Victor Johan: The appointed (and unelected) city mayor is making decisions to enrich the federal ministry-supported Yayasan Wilayah Persekutuan (YWP).

That's the point of this whole scheme. The city dwellers should stand up and protest this unjustified ploy to support the cronies.

Merdeka: You are not solving the root of the problem. Can't you wait until the MRT is completed?

Oxymoronictendencies: The outcry over these increased charges is interesting. An educated guess would suggest there are far more unpaid and illegal parkers than paid parkers in KL.

Hence if they want to reduce congestion and increase revenues, it would surely be more effective to address the source of the congestion, which to some large degree results from illegal parking.

And use that to raise more revenue, rather than to introduce increased parking fees which will almost certainly increase the amount of illegal parking, reduce revenues and increase congestion.

However, why the sudden need to increase revenues? A more cynical person might note that neither Selangor nor Penang are increasing parking fees.

Just Umno-controlled DBKL where those impacted are unlikely to be Umno supporters.
