The Penang state government is set to reward Penangite shuttler Chan Peng Soon RM100,000 for his accomplishments at the Rio Olympic Games.

Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng confirmed this at the Dewan Sri Penang today.

Lim also expressed hope that Chan and his mixed doubles pair Goh Yiu Ling would create history by winning the country’s first ever gold medal.

“We will give our Penang-born Chan Peng Soon RM100,000 for winning the silver medal.

“If he can bring back the gold medal, then we will think of something extra and special for him,” said Lim in a video uploaded on his Facebook page.

Chan and Goh had qualified for the mixed doubles finals on Monday.

The pair packed off 2012 London Olympics silver pair, China's Chen Xu-Ma Jin 21-12, 21-19 in the 45-minute heart-stopping match.

They will face Indonesia’s Tontowi Ahmad-Liliyana Natsir in today’s final, a repeat of the group matches tie with the world number three, who beat the Malaysians 21-15, 21-11 last Saturday.

Meanwhile, Menteri Besar Ahmad Razif Abd Rahman congratulated national elite cyclist Azizulhasni Awang for winning a bronze medal in the keirin event.

He said it was something to be proud off and a meaningful one for Terengganu as Azizulhasni, who is from Dungun, was able to compete with other world champions.

"The first medal (for Malaysia) for a cycling event in the Olympics will always be in history and I am confident Azizulhasni's success will be an inspiration to future cyclists," he said when contacted by Bernama today.

The state government, he said, would reward Azizulhasni as an incentive for winning the medal to inspire others.

"Thank you Azizulhasni, who never tires in carrying the Malaysia spirit to the world stage. Thank you also to all the coaches and their families. The Terengganu people are proud of the Pocket Rocket Man!" he added.

'Whole country rejoices with you'

In another development, Sime Darby Berhad (YSD) said its philanthropic arm will award Azizulhasni RM100,000 for his bronze medal win.

"Congratulations Azizul. You did your best and we are very proud of your achievement. Despite the interruptions during the final, you never gave up till the very end.

"Your performance under the circumstances has made you even more deserving of the win and the whole country rejoices with you.

"Not forgetting coach John Beasley and the whole team, for the hard work put in, it has paid off and you have made Malaysia proud," said YSD chairperson Musa Hitam said in a statement today.

Azizulhasni was part of the YSD Track Cycling Team-Road to London Olympics 2012 which was funded by YSD with a sponsorship of RM2 million for three years from 2009 to 2012.
