MCA Wanita has urged the police to probe Sungai Besar Umno division chief Jamal Md Yunos for possible Islamic State (IS) links, following the latter's allegation that Bersih has been infiltrated by the terrorist organisation.

Its chairperson Heng Seai Kie said it was of concern who Jamal, who heads the red shirts lobby group, would be privy to information concerning IS involvement.

"Other than Bukit Aman’s counter terrorism unit and international intelligentsia agencies, the only other 'reliable sources' who would have any knowledge on IS operatives’ movements or plans would be existing IS operatives themselves, wannabes.

"This is because International intelligentsia agencies will not divulge such top secret information regarding terrorist activities and plans with the general public, and at best, would only share such information with the heads of states of their respective governments or with other international intelligentsia agencies fighting against terrorism," said Heng in a statement today.

She added counter terrorist bodies would not divulge such top secret information regarding terrorist activities to the general public.

Heng said although she disagrees with Bersih, the authorities should "immediately begin probes against the red shirts leader as to how he obtained such information, verify if the data he holds has basis or not.

"Moreover, Bukit Aman must also investigate if Jamal Yunus himself has any links with IS or any other terrorist organisations eg Al Qaeda, Jammah Islamiah whose supporters have been detained in Malaysia.

"If necessary, the Home Ministry must use preventive laws like Security Offences (Special Measures) Act 2012 (Sosma) and Prevention of Terrorism Act 2015 (Pota) on Jamal Yunus if Bukit Aman’s findings reveal any terrorist links."

On Wednesday, Jamal, one of the leaders of the red shirts movement formed to counter last year's massive Bersih 4 rally, claimed reliable sources had told him IS operatives have infiltrated Bersih.

The Umno grassroots leader is rallying a counterprotest to Bersih's upcoming fifth rally towards electoral reform and for Prime Minister Najib Razak to step down.

Bersih 5 kicks off today with convoys launched simultaneously in six locations nationwide to build momentum for the rally on Nov 19 in Kuala Lumpur.

'Prevent vigilantism'

Heng said the police should first probe Jamal before Bersih, to verify if his data is authentic.

She said Jamal's "wild allegations are indeed alarming as they can spark vigilantism against Bersih chairperson Maria Chin Abdullah and any participants of Bersih 5 and thus create societal chaos".

Heng, a former BN deputy minister, said she nevertheless disagrees with Maria's call for Najib's removal, echoing criticisms that it is "undemocratic" as Najib is "democratically elected".

She said the Bersih chief should join politics if that was her inclination, saying it was inconsistent with the coalition for free and fair elections' goals.

"Nevertheless, we are also concerned of the right to safety of Maria, the rallygoers from any potential intimidation and harm from Jamal Yunus, his red shirts sidekicks and previously from Mohd Ali Baharom aka Ali Tinju, who warned of hounding Maria," said Heng.

Bersih has organised four mega rallies to call for free and fair elections, last year's spanning two days and seeing hundreds of thousands rally in the capital city for reform.

Bersih 5 was initiated after the US Department of Justice (DOJ) launched its civil suits to seize assets acquired in the country through funds allegedly siphoned from 1MDB, Najib's pet project.

The DOJ court filing cites damning details involving the unnamed character "Malaysian Official 1", which appears 36 times in the document and which has finally been confirmed to refer to Najib.
