The Court of Appeal in Putrajaya today maintained the award of RM357,500 given to the family of lorry driver P Chandran, who died in custody at the Dang Wangi district police station in 2012.
A three-member bench led by Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat unanimously dismissed the appeal, by five police officers, the inspector-general of police and the government as defendants, on the quantum of exemplary damages awarded by the High Court in Kuala Lumpur, which was RM200,000.
“We are unanimous in our decision. There is no reason to disturb the quantum awarded by the High Court,” Justice Tengku Maimun said.
The judge also ordered the government to pay RM10,000 in costs to the family.
