An independent's hope: To bring 'politics of the people'

INTERVIEW | The present political culture leaves a lot to be desired, believes independent candidate Toh Sin Wah.

According to Toh, both BN and Pakatan Harapan are led by political dynasties, making politics appear exclusive and nepotistic.

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak, for instance, is the son of former prime minister Abdul Razak Hussein and cousin of Defence Minister Hishammuddin Hussein.

Jailed PKR de facto leader Anwar Ibrahim’s wife Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail now helms the party in his stead, while their daughter Nurul Izzah Anwar is one of its vice-presidents.

Coupled with the common perception that politics is “dirty,” this scenario has discouraged “successful and knowledgeable” Malaysians from running for office, Toh said, and this in turn prevented Parliament and state assemblies from the being the chambers of wisdom they should be.
