Covid-19 (Jan 11): 2,232 new cases, spike in S'wak

COVID-19 | The Health Ministry today reported 2,232 new Covid-19 cases with Sarawak reporting three-digit infections (153) for the first time.

Most of the new cases in Sarawak were reported to be in Miri (93 new cases), which alongside the Kuching and Sibu districts, will be placed under a conditional movement control order (MCO) for two weeks beginning Wednesday.

The highest number of new infections was reported in the Klang Valley (34.7 percent), followed by Johor (17.7 percent) and Sabah (16.8 percent). 

Leading indicators:

  • Active cases: 28,554↑ (1,222 more than the previous day)
  • Patients in ICU: 187 ↑ ( 16 more than the previous day, new record)
  • Intubated patients: 87 ↑ (11 more than the previous day, new record)
  • Deaths: 4

The number of active cases (28,554) has come precipitously close to the 28,674 Covid-19 bed capacity at hospitals and quarantine centres as last reported by the Health Ministry.

Of the four deaths reported today, three were in Selangor. The average age of the three victims was 52.3. 

The Covid-19 related deaths in the Klang Valley accounted for 20.5 percent of the national total (555).

One death was reported in Sabah. The cumulative Covid-19 death toll for Sabah has reached 284 or 51.2 percent of the national total.

Details of the deceased are as follows:

Patient 121,697 - Female, 56, passed away at the Sungai Buloh Hospital, Selangor.

Patient 126,619 - Male, 54, passed away at the Sungai Buloh Hospital, Selangor.

Patient 134,204 - Female, 47, passed away at the Sungai Buloh Hospital, Selangor.

Patient 133,961 - Foreign male, 50, body brought to the Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan, Sabah.

Of the 2,232 new cases, six were imported.

Meanwhile, the Health Ministry today classified eight new clusters. There was a change in reporting format, where specific locations have been named for community spread clusters.

The Jalan Keluli cluster involved the targeted testing of a factory in the Kota Tinggi and Segamat districts of Johor. There are 42 cases in this cluster.

The Medan Idaman cluster involved the targeted screening of a supermarket in the Cheras and Titiwangsa districts of Kuala Lumpur. There are 10 cases in this cluster.

The Jelita cluster involved Taman Jeli in the Miri district of Sarawak. The index case had returned from Malacca. There are eight cases in this cluster.

The Kampung Renok cluster involved an index case who recently travelled from Selangor and tested positive on Jan 1, after developing symptoms. This cluster involved Kampung Renok Baru in Gua Musang, Kelantan, and has 23 cases.

The Kampung Geting cluster involved an index case in Tumpat, Kelantan, who recently travelled to Penang and tested positive on Jan 6 after developing symptoms. There are 11 cases in this cluster.

The Lumut Barat cluster involved an index case in a military base in Manjung, Perak, who recently travelled to Kuala Lumpur and tested positive on Jan 1 after developing symptoms. There are 11 cases in this cluster.

The Kubang Bujuk cluster involved an index case who developed a severe acute respiratory illness and a religious study centre in Kubang Bujuk, Kuala Terengganu. The index case tested positive on Jan 8. There are 10 cases in this cluster.

The Kejaya cluster involved the Felda Kerteh 4 in the Dungun district, Terengganu, where the index case tested positive on Jan 6 after reporting symptoms. There are nine cases in this cluster.
