Pak Lah or Ku Li, unity gov't only way out

Some people are condemning the idea of a unity government raised by Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah without understanding why a unity government was mooted in the first place.

Pakatan Rakyat supporters argued that they do not want PR to work with the corrupted BN leaders. Well, that's a true concern because they believe if you start to live along with the corrupted, you will be perceived as corrupted as well.

The BN supporters’ argument is relatively more simple to understand and that is why They need to share power when they are in control of Parliament.

Let's reflect on what we were thinking when we first heard the news that Pak Lah would not be defending his Umno presidency and then when Najib Abdul Razak won the Umno presidency uncontested.

We knew in our hearts that this was not right as the country’s next leader has so many unanswered allegations hanging behind his back. Can he perform his duty well with all the on-going attacks against him?

Many share the same view. Now, let us examine what ideas the public have come out with to prevent Najib from becoming the PM.

Most of the people, including Pakatan Rakyat and Raja Petra Kamaruddin have called on Pak Lah to continue as PM. One blogger even said, ‘Pak Lah, please make this flip-flop as the most counted one!’

However, with Pak Lah no longer the Umno president, he has lost his support from within Umno itself. In order for him to continue as PM, he needs to command the support of the majority of the members of Parliament.

With Umno no longer supporting him, he needs Pakatan MPs’ votes plus another 30 BN MPs votes to convince the King that he still commands the support of the majority and therefore can continue as PM.

But this plan has two setbacks. The King has already thanked Pak Lah for his good work and wants a smooth transition of power which means Parliament has to accept the fact that Pak Lah is indeed going to resign.

Also, Pak Lah supported the BN takeover in Perak which shows that he is not a person that upholds the constitution. He allows laws to be interpreted for BN’s own benefit instead of turning to the rakyat for an answer on who should be in charge in Perak.

Now, there are some like me who think Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah is a better choice as a caretaker PM before the next general election. He has just the right mix being of BN, Umno and royalty background. He speaks for the rakyat and has the knowledge on how to save the economy.

He has been talking about boldly reforming that the government and that is what the country needs. He has always called a spade a spade. Look at some of his bold comments here .

But for him to become PM, he also needs the Pakatan MPs’ votes plus those from 30 BN MPs - the same scenario for Pak Lah to stay on. But he is the better choice for he commands greater confidence and he is a different breed from the rest in Umno.

As you all can see, both plans need Pakatan to work together with some BN MPs to achieve their main objective which is to prevent Najib from taking over and to appoint a better PM who can lead Malaysia out of this mess.

If this happen, it will automatically give birth to a unity government without us creating one, as we understand.

The reason for a unity government is clear - to save the country from sinking further by appointing the right PM to lead the country. This can only be done by either one of the two plans outlined above, both of which will result in the creation of unity government automatically.

I hope the people can understand that a unity government need not be created purposely, but is created as a product to help the country secure a better future.

To be fair to Najib, if he didn't have so much baggage, I would not mind having him as my PM. But if you are tainted somehow, or if the public perceives you as tainted, you just have to leave office.

This is to ensure the confidence of rakyat in the integrity and credibility of the government and its agencies is maintained at a high level.

As Tengku Razaleigh rightly puts it: ‘Our actions must be guided by a vision, designed around a strategy and governed with integrity’.

And the person who upholds this principle is the person who deserves to be the PM of Malaysia.
