Police, not Bar Council, must do soul-searching

I refer to the Malaysiakini report Sack Hisham and IGP, Bersih tells Najib .

The chief of the police force has the gall to say that lawyers have to do some soul-searching after five of their members got arrested. The police chief should himself do some soul-searching as he has yet to answer to the public on A Kugan's murder case which took place right under the custody of the police.

It can be seen very clearly that the police force is trying to get the public to forget about the whole incident so that the police can get away in the case of A Kugan which had resulted in his death.

Perhaps further soul searching needs to be done by the police chief for the failure of his force to come to the aid of senior member of Parliament and DAP chairperson Karpal Singh when he was stopped by political hooligan in Parliament.

The police force seems bent on maintaining a political status quo instead of carrying on the business of policing the nation and ridding it of crime. It has yet to to rid the nation of the hadbag snatchers' menace which has cost the lives of many women.

If the police are as fast with crime busting as they with political orders, our level of crime can be reduced. But instead of crime busting, they prefer politics and they are very good at it as well.

There are many highly educated police personnel in the force who are still languishing in the junior ranks and are just left to rot till they are retired off. These people should instead be promoted and positions based on qualification and experience should be given to the ones who have what it takes to become professional policemen.

If we were to take the unnecessary arresting of parliamentarians, state assembly persons and supporters during the last sitting of the Perak state assembly on May 7, it will go to show how ridiculous the force has become.

If the same vigour and energy is used to police the neighbourhoods in the Klang Valley, Johor Baru, Penang and other cities in the Peninsular, the lives of many young women would have been spared. But sadly, the force believes that state assembly proceedings are more dangerous than snatch thieves and robbers.

The force needs a complete overhaul starting from the top going downwards. Politics must be separated from the force and politicians must not interfere with the decisions made by police commanders who know what is best for the situation at hand.

Listening to the ruling elite and treating elected representatives like dirt is not what a professional police force ought to do. It is very evident that the police take sides as they seem reluctant to take action against BN politicians.

The actual soul-searching that needs to be done is by the police and not the Bar Council. The day the police stop meddling in politics will be the day it gets the due respect from the people.

Until then the perception that lingers on in the minds of the public will be difficult to cast away.
