I refer to an article where four Hong Kong and five Malaysian students were arrested by police for trespassing on Universiti Putra Malaysia grounds.
It is strange that our boys in blue were involved in a situation of this nature when the students were hanging out at a cafeteria inside the students' hostel at about 9pm.
While it is understandable that universities have rules and regulations for their hostels, the fact remains that the campus is public domain. For students, the night was young.
As a parent, I would rather have my son hang out in the university compound rather than in a disco or a pub at that hour of the night.
The campus security acted in an uncalled for manner. The university should put a stop to such behaviour which could embarrass the country's public universities.
It should also refrain from over-reacting unless these young people had been caught in a compromising position.
The security guards could have just advised the young people of the late hour, and asked them to leave the cafeteria instead of dragging them to the authorities.
Even the police said that they were only investigating the students for trespassing and not for 'propagating Christianity' as alleged by several online news portals and foreign news agencies.
And, since religious issues are sensitive, the security guards should have handled such a situation with more care instead of blowing it out of proportion.
