CCTV must be mandatory for all interrogations

It is indeed sad and horrifying to learn that a young and dynamic man (Teoh Beng Hock) died mysteriously in the compound of the MACC.

It is natural for family members and the public to be furious and angry over the tragic incident. While we pray for Teoh's soul to rest in peace, let us also pray that the truth prevails.

The best we can do now is to allow the authorities to carry out their investigations into the incident and respect the wishes of Teoh's family.

If we are not happy or satisfied with the police findings, we can then request for the setting up of a Royal Commission.

What is important now is to look at ways and means to make interrogations safe and humane.

A new set of guidelines (Standard Operating Procedures) should be drawn up to safeguard those who are interrogated and also the investigating officers from unfair accusations of wrongdoing.

CCTV recordings should also be made mandatory for all interrogations by enforcement agencies.

The mono-ethnic composition of enforcement officers in many of the enforcement agencies in the country does not reflect well on a multi-racial country like Malaysia.

We should ensure all enforcement agencies are made of a multi-racial workforce as this will prevent unnecessary speculation of racial bias and accusations.
