Serious flaws in investigative procedures

The untimely and mysterious death of Teoh Beng Hock has shaken the nation and has exposed serious flaws in the way MACC operates.

Thus far, the explanations surrounding his death has created more problems, that only a proper inquiry may resolve. Conjectures can be proven or disproved by incontrovertible facts, thus the need for a credible inquiry.

Death in custody reflects badly on the nation - and those who may not be responsible may be unfairly accused.

No citizen should dread or fear to assist the MACC in getting to the truth, which after all was established to combat corruption. Sadly its reputation is now at stake.

No citizen ought to be in custody without a witness in attendance, preferably a legal counsel, if only to prevent such an incident from recurring. Also there need to be witness to provide an account of proceedings that could allay doubts and uncertainty.

Many countries also have, as standard procedure, audio and visual recordings of all such interviews. Politicising Teoh's mysterious death is a double-edged sword.

The truth could be stranger than the suspicion, perhaps even more astounding, so for this reason, the government must not leave any stone unturned to give the public and Teoh's family the truth.

This may best be done with a royal commission, as some politicians from both government and the opposition have suggested. The possible scenarios will be limited and an intelligent public can make up its own mind.

Many Malaysians are in grief over Teoh's death, a young life tragically cut short before the happiest day of his life.

I hope the authorities will review their procedures not only to prevent a recurrence but to safeguard their own reputation.

Our prayers and condolences are with Teoh's fiance and family.
