Building permits now must adhere to Malaysian standards, some of those is to ensure facilities are disabled-friendly.
However, I still find many buildings are without disabled-friendly facilities and they still manage to get a CF.
A lot of these so-called disabled-friendly facilities do not meet the needs of disabled people. The development plans just adhere to guidelines in order to get approval.
An example is disabled toilets without the necessary handrails.
People think that all disabled people do is ask for help. In fact, the environment and infrastructure are the larger factors that force disabled people to ask for the help.
We are citizens in Malaysia; why do we as disabled people need to beg for help? Why can't the government make the facilities friendly instead of us always struggling in the unfriendly environment.
My needs are simple. I need only a disabled car park nearer to the entrance; I need a handrail to go up and down a staircase. But I have found difficulties in finding such facilities.
Agencies argue over standards, but no one bothers to check if disabled people can or do use the so-called facilities.
They declare that Putrajaya buildings comply to the standards but the facilities don't meet disabled people's needs.
I'm also quite curious whether Putrajaya has disabled people in their committee. Perhaps not, and that is why the facilities are so shoddy.
They say "nobody plans to fail, but everybody fails to plan". It is obvious how much we fail to plan for the disabled people.
