It has been reported that most of the expenses or cost to build and
upkeep a F1 team would be financed by private investors thus the
government is not shouldering the whole load.
Another reason given is that it will boost our image abroad to put us
in the league of the best in the world.
My arguments are, firstly, if you look at all the other teams currently participating in the F!, none of them are financed by any government in Europe or Japan and these teams are mainly run by private enterprises.
Even rich companies have backed out citing huge financial losses.. Why must Malaysia deplete its funds on a project that only attracts the rich and are of no consequence to the ordinary man on the street? The funds could be better utilised at home to improve the less developed areas.
Secondly, if we look at our public transport system in the capital, it
Is in a pathetic state. One of our oldest transport systems run by KTMB, has to resort to using antiquated modes and coaches to try to provide a service to the best of their ability with limited available resources.
Why can't the funds that are going to be channelled to the prestigious F1, be gainfully employed to improve the overall transport system by which a majority of the rakyat can benefit? I would invite the PM to take a ride on one of the shuttle services operated by KTMB to have a better idea of the state we are in where public transport is concerned.
There were a lot of promises made but nothing has materialised thus far. Seems to be a lot of talk without any walk.
As it is, the cost to host one F1 race per year is already a burden on the national oil company but then our image in the world seems to be a priority and focus as opposed to national interests and needs.
A good, efficient and well-organised public transport system can give a better image to the world through tourism than a mere race which only a few benefit from and patronise.
It is time our leaders think more about serving the rakyat than serving the world.
