We refer to the letter Zoos here only cater for human enjoyment .
The Natural Resources and Environment Ministry appreciates the concerns highlighted by SM Mohd Idris of Sahabat Alam Malaysia (SAM), in his letter above.
The ministry is aware of the growing concern among the public and SAM on the well-being of wildlife kept at zoos. The suggestions made by SAM are in parallel with the ministry’s plan in making sure all zoos are best managed in terms of facilities and the well-being of their wildlife.
The new proposed policy will look into ensuring that all zoos are regulated and the welfare of w their ildlife is well taken care of.
Under the Protection of Wildlife Act 1972, the management of a zoo is required to get licences or special permits issued by the Department of Wildlife and National Parks (Perhilitan).
Moreover, the Department of Wildlife and National Parks is conducting regular visits to zoos as a part of the department’s enforcement measures.
Offences committed by any individual including cruelty to the wildlife will be prosecuted and the ministry is also looking into revoking the licences or special permits of those found guilty of committing such offences.
The ministry is hoping that with these actions, zoos will be more concerned over the well-being of their wildlife and not merely looking at making a profit.
The writer is responding on behalf of the secretary–general, Natural Resources and Environment Ministry.
