Based on 2006's press reports many personalities made a fuss about the 10 percent increase in Majilis Bandaraya Petaling Jaya's assessment rates.

They said the increase was against " the principle of administrative law & good governance ", and illegal. They went so far as to pass a motion of no-confidence against the MBPJ's president and administration.

They said that they would lodge a complaint with the federal government to "intervene and restore the Council's integrity " and that the 2006 Budget was passed without sufficient debate as " No budget is without flaws ".

After March 2008, one of these personalities involved became a state assemblyperson and some were appointed by the Pakatan Rakyat Selangor government as MBPJ councillors.

These personalities have forgotten their battle cries. The 10 percent increase in rates has still not been resolved.

The Petaling Jaya Residents Association Section 5 (RA5), have submitted a petition over the matter to the MBPJ but have yet to receive a response.

Examination of the 2010 budget had many weaknesses which were pointed out in a letter to the menteri besar and councillors. No responses have been received .

Anwar Ibrahim was recently made Selangor economic advisor. RA5 then wrote him a letter, asking him to examine Petaling Jaya's microeconomic issues.

RA5 challenges the Pakatan Rakyat leader to walk the talk by cleaning up its own backyard like the Pakatan Rakyat-controlled MBPJ Council, and rectify the weaknesses in regards to the MBPJ Budget.

The Petaling Jaya rate payers and electorate deserves a reduction in the assessment rates and ask the new economic adviser to meet these challenges first, before tackling Selangor's macroeconomic issues.

Johan Tung Abdullah is president of the Petaling Jaya Section 5 residents association.
