I refer to Malaysiakini report Penang PKR MP may defect to new party .

Just when the controversial MP for Bandar Kulim, Zulkifli Noordin’s case is still left unsettled by the party’s top leadership, another crisis awaits the party if these rumours about a PKR MP from Penang about to defect are true.

One wonders what other crisis awaits the party as other lawmakers who are dissatisfied with the top leadership of PKR might follow suit and leave the party in the lurch.

I can’t help but feel that will all the controversies surrounding PKR , the party under the tutelage of Anwar Ibrahim and which started off with a bang during the last general elections will end up with a whimper come the next poll.

Everything seems to be falling apart with PKR as one has to admit that most of their candidates who won their seats during the last polls are made up of former Umno members with ‘attitude problems’ and have brought along their bad habits with them.

DAP and PAS don’t seem to have much disciplines problems compared to PKR but the opposition front can kiss their dream of taking over Putrajaya goodbye if PKR’s internal squabbles fester in the open which can only weaken the party in the long run.

Anwar Ibrahim has his second sodomy trial coming up in the next few days. One shudders to think how the party is going to survive if their supreme leader is found guilty of sodomy again and sent off to prison. Yes, it will make him a martyr among his ardent supporters but it will leave the party headless when the next polls is held.

One does not have to be a political analyst to know that PKR is in a tumultuous situation right now as Muslims MPs in the party seem to be at odds with their non-Malay MPs when finding common ground over race and religions issues.

Over 50 years ago, a visionary leader by the name of Onn Jaafar wanted to open up Umno to other races but his proposal was rebuffed by other leaders in his party then. Being a man of principle, the first president of Umno resigned from his party and formed a new party, Parti Negara which catered for all races under one umbrella.

But the people then could not accept the new party’s struggle and Parti Negara died stillborn in the late 1950s.

Is history repeating itself again? Will PKR with it multi-cultural approach and multiracial composition suffer a fate similar to Jaffar Onn party? Only time will tell.
