'Cos of Zul, PKR may lose ‘middle ground’ influence

I refer to the Malaysiakini report PKR slaps gag order on Zul Noordin .

Dear Anwar Ibrahim,

I remember in a meeting held not too long ago between PKR reps and some interest groups representing a section of the public (which I also happened to attend) a question was raised as to how PKR plans to deal with Zulkifly Noordin.

I recall that your reply was that stern action will be taken should Zulkifly fail to toe the party line in the future. Well, that was then. Today, we see how this YB is dragging PKR's reputation through the mud - if I may suggest it as such.

Your somewhat slap–on-the-wrist approach in handling this matter has been noted with concern by some reputable bloggers. I think it is safe to assume that their views represent what many fair-minded Malaysians are themselves feeling.

Datuk Seri, the one area where I feel Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak fails is that of credibility. If that man didn’t carry the weight of scandals that shroud him in office, then I am persuaded to opine that many Malaysians would go back to supporting Barisan Nasional.

Why not? Especially if PKR resembles - as Zaid Ibrahim puts it - ‘a poor man’s version of Umno’.

And trust me when I say that many of us are truly tired of the daily ‘tarik-tali’ political news that we – taxpayers – have to put up it, with seemingly no resolution at all. If credibility is proving to be Najib’s bane, then how much more must the leader of Pakatan Rakyat – the man many are counting upon for the dawn of a New Malaysia – prove himself to be credible on all counts?

Do you think it is fair to cause despair to Malaysians who have placed their hope on Pakatan to turn around the mess in Malaysian politics just because you – one person – apparently failed to rein in decisively this one chap - Zulkifly Noordin?

Already newspapers like The Star and Malay Mail are going to town with your poor response. And whether we like it or not, this government mouthpiece newspapers can still influence fence-sitting voters; part of the so-called ‘Middle Malaysia’ crowd, if you like.

A few times, I have raised the matter of how PKR plans to deal with Zukifly by sending e-mails to the PKR headquarters or to my MP - long before this issue exploded to become what it is today. I never received any reply.

At times like that, I wonder why I gave my vote in the last general election to a PKR candidate. It also made me wonder what is the point of politicians having blogs, Twitter, Facebook, blah, blah, blah, if no one bothers to at least attend to queries.

And I wasn’t asking for them to fix my ‘longkang’ either. Trust me when I say that I would have even appreciated a reply telling me to ‘get lost’ rather than no reply at all. So, when the chance came to directly hear your plan of action on this matter, well, I thought finally it would deserve the appropriate attention it needed.

If some MP failed to answer my concern, then at least the boss himself was giving me his assurance. But if the boss now looks powerless, then what can we expect from the rest of the organisation?

You cannot blame anyone if the ‘middle ground’ voters start to tilt towards believing that you are no more than a crowd-pleaser. And if that happens, you are forever going to remain in the shadows of Putrajaya, and will never see the real thing as you have always aspired to.
