I refer to the Malaysiakini report Downpour dampens Najib's CNY visit in which it is reported that I ‘made a cameo appearance at Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak’s Chinese New Year function at Pandamaran and handed over to him a memorandum on the needs of the locals.
The content of the memorandum, or ‘wish list’ is as follows:
1. Push for the prosecution of lawyer VK Lingam and gang. This will go a long way towards restoring faith in the judiciary.
2. Allow for fresh elections in Perak. This will restore confidence the separation of powers doctrine. The royalty should not have executive powers.
3. Remove the Printing Presses and Publishing Act. A censored society cannot be an innovative society.
4. Dismantle the ISA. This is a draconian law that everybody despises.
5. Remove the Official Secrets Act and implement a Freedom of Information Act.
6. Tell Utusan Malaysia to stop its racist rhetoric. Umno controls Utusan so any racist rhetoric from that paper will be seen as having Umno approval.
7. Keep Umno hawks who are anti-‘1Malaysia’ in check. Don't let your good message be ruined by the attitude of a few conservatives bent on propagating ‘Ketuanan Melayu’.
8. Allow the MACC to fight corruption without fear or favour. They need to net some ‘big fish’ to instill confidence in the public that they are serious in fighting corruption.
9. Ensure justice for Teoh Beng Hock.
10. Give Kelantan its due oil royalties.
