With the recent resignations and crossovers of politicians from one party to another, the ‘rakyat’ particularly the constituents of the affected areas, cannot help but feel cheated by such unscrupulous and unprincipled politicians.
Granted , there is no written law to deal with such occurrences, there are still the moral laws and unwritten laws that guide our actions in our everyday lives.
As a representatives of the people and purportedly morally upright and law abiding , it is very, very immoral of them to resign from their party and declare themselves as an independent when they never contested as an independent in the first place.
When the ‘rakyat’ went to the polling stations to cast their votes for the candidates of their choice, it was the party symbol that was printed on the ballot paper - not the pictures of candidates.
The candidates happen to be representatives of the party contesting the seat of that constituency. They won based on their party's platform - not on their own personality. They won because of the people's belief in the party they represented.
It was all very heartbreaking suddenly to find oneself being represented by a so-called independent, who did not register; nor whose symbol was found on the ballot paper and who did not stand for election as an independent during the general election.
The people affected did not vote for an independent (there were none on the ballot paper). They voted for the party of their choice. I would feel betrayed by such unscrupulous people. I would feel cheated. I would feel angry. I would never again vote for such people who would take me for a ride - no matter who they represent .
These members of Parliament and assemblypersons who resigned from their party and declared themselves as independents and who have refused to resign from their seats to pave the way for a by-election should be cited for fraud and misrepresentation.
I am sure there must be such written laws in our system. Parliament must come up with a new law to prevent such fraud and misrepresentation from politicians from both sides. These is to protect the people and prevent the abuse of the people' trust.
A mandate was given to these MPs and assemblypersons to serve the people - not to serve their own interest or their party's. I say ‘ no’ to such independents!
