• Media industry needs a total revamp

  • It is amazing that the government continues to grant licences to newspapers run by the so-called champions of society. Our media is a joke and nowhere in Malaysia will you find an unbiased newspaper/news portal and that includes Malaysiakini.

Your articles are increasingly veering towards being pro-opposition. True, you have to do that as the opposition gets no voice but to remain relevant, you'll have to find that balance. Nowadays, if we want to get the low down on what's happening, we'll probably have to read a few papers.

I hope when Pakatan Rakyat comes in, they will revamp the whole media industry. I believe they can do that by abolishing the Printing and Publications Act.

Let the readers be the judge of which papers succeed or fail. Another point is that all newspapers need to be owned by the public. No more MCA/Umno owned papers.

These media companies should be floated on the Kuala Lumpur Stock Exchange and no one party should be allowed to own more than 5% in shares. Their board of directors should also be nominated by the shareholders.

But all existing Umno/MCA owned newspapers should not be touched. They should be allowed to continue. Let Umno/MCA control them.

But with the above changes, there will be new competition. Readers can then decide to switch and switch they will. Soon Utusan Malaysia and The Star will be just propaganda papers.

Pakatan, please make sure you do not use any highhanded tactics to control these government- linked papers. Let the people decide with their money. They will get the message.
