I refer to the Malaysiakini report Nazri says wrong to use death penalty ’ .
Abolishing the death penalty because of the imperfect nature of the criminal justice system makes just as much sense as abolishing the system in its entirety for the same reason.
After all, it isn't just the death penalty that is irreversible. Pretty much every punishment is, even imprisonment. After all, who is going to give back the number of years a wrongly convicted person spent languishing in jail when he could have been out free?
It is also funny how liberal groups such as Amnesty International and the Bar Council talk about how there is no evidence that capital punishment acts as a deterrent.
Imprisonment is no deterrent as well. Theft and robbery, which both see an increase, are punishable by imprisonment. Does that mean we should do away with imprisonment?
Actually, if deterrence was to be an issue, harsher, more severe kinds of punishment need to be imposed, such as those under the Islamic hudud law. Yet many of those groups would oppose such a measure. Why the hypocrisy?
When is our government going to start listening to the majority of the rakyat instead of groups with vested interests? The people want the death penalty, and so the penalty should stay, I say!
