Malaysia’s Jekyll foreign role and Hyde domestic role

I refer to Malaysiakini report PM: Bad impact on people if BN loses power .

Prime Minister Najib Abdul Razak has come up with two bold projects namely the New Economic Model (NEM) and ‘1Malaysia’ but the way both these ambitious plans are being viewed negatively by certain quarters and the way they are being implemented by the government machinery, does not give any confidence to those who had looked forward with hope for a change for the better after 22 years of a government of one man, by one man and for one man in the guise of democracy.

The PM must realise that in the democratic process, the people have the free choice of electing the government for better or worse. The PM cannot go about intimidating the people to vote for BN or it would spell doom for the nation. The results of the last general election should have served as an eyeopener for the ruling coalition that all is not well and that quite a number of people no longer subscribe to their line of governance and behaviour.

Instead of instituting bold changes to correct some of these mistakes of the past, the government tries to use its political machinery to frighten the people that there is no other government capable of running this country than BN. It is so intoxicated with power to the point of feeling indispensable.

The reality of the situation today is that the smaller component parties of BN are no longer seen to be the subjugated and obedient partners of Umno and have started to question some of their policies that appear to be deviating from the original agreed concept of rule and governance.

Even within Umno’s rank-and-file there are differences of opinions surfacing that are undermining the PM's efforts and the proper discharge of his duties. The BN does not command the same the respect and honour it once had due to its own avaricious ways that kept on growing rather than diminishing.

The only bad impact is complacency on the part of BN which continues to play the race game to drive fear into the people in that they (BN) are the only custodians of their own communities and other choices will be disastrous.

Malaysian politics has reached a stage where finally we see a viable opposition which if given a chance, can produce better results than a party governing for over half-a-century and yet failed to instill a feeling of oneness. Though in appearance we are one but the fact is, there still remains a lot of fear, suspicion, mistrust and intolerance.

The maxim ‘united we stand, divided we fall’ becomes a fundamental survival tool today in order to face the challenges of global competition and foreign investments. The liberialisation policies of many emerging markets have set conducive climates for inflow of funds and boosted industrial developments while Malaysia continues to play a Jekyll foreign role and Hyde domestic role in presenting itself to the potential investors.

Some bad publicity circulating around the world has also contributed to some extent to the damage of the country's image. The dragging of feet and delaying tactics employed for some controversial cases being the main culprits for our negative global impact.

Yes PM, work on national unity as a priority together with eradicating poverty and helping the more unfortunate and destitute. Be aware of the fact that the nation has awoken to a political reality that demands much needed changes for the future well-being of the nation. Corruption and favouritism must be stopped before it destroys the country.

Prove yourself to be a PM for all Malaysians and the results can be overwhelmingly in your favour. Words and glamorous talk mean nothing if not followed with solid and sustained action. Respect and support must be earned, not demanded.
