Foiled rally: We can still protest by vote

If one wants to look differently or from another angle at the recent street protests in the city over the 'Interlok' issue by segments of the Indian community, it can be seen that there is a growing displeasure art something that the community deems is offensive to them, that has been completely ignored to date.

Many NGOs and individuals have via the media and elsewhere gone to great lengths to sincerely express why the novel should be withdrawn from the syllabus and not be used as a compulsory exam literature text book Form Five students.

It would seem that many of these sincere and honest explanations are falling on deaf ears, which itself is disappointing.

.

The Interlok issue should not have come this far, especially if the ruling government is officially pushing something as ‘wonderful’ as the 1Malaysia concept.

The Interlok issue runs completely against the whole grain of the 1Malaysia concept and will surely bear repercussions from the previously abiding and silent Indian community, whatever their party affiliations are currently.

While banned bodies like Hindraf unfortunately bears all the bad press with insinuations that they are losing support, this may not necessarily be the real situation on the ground, as can be seen from how things turned out in the previous general election after the Makkal Sakthi movement appeared.

Logic would help the governing forces to sense that there is always a silent majority who will not go down to the streets for "various reasonable reasons" but will show their individual power during the electoral process as "peace loving citizens" of the country.

What the country needs now is farsighted leadership that is able to see beyond racial politics and move towards the greater good of 1Malaysia.
