Protecting religion, or just plain authoritarianism?

The sudden upsurge on having a certain religious identity and ownership is seen as an attempt to control, dictate and confuse the people of a threat that is more imaginary than a reality. It is perceived that there are certain obvious limitations, weaknesses and lack of fortitude in the way the current PM governs the country.

When looked at from a broader perspective, this kind of gross violation of religious freedom is applied to even the most widely practised religion in the country. They are also facing constant scrutiny and harassment for even basic humanitarian reasons that only preach love, respect and peace for one another’s religious tenets.

Consequently, it is a very clear indication of employing religion to control and manipulate the people's thinking. It can also be construed as forced rehabilitation or forced compliance against one's will even though it conforms to international acceptance and norms. A practrise, no different from the communist or Nazi era.

On the one hand, there are ample signs and optimism of a nation moving forward and progressing as a vibrant and forward looking nation but on the other, the signs of systematic and calculated 'oppression and persecution' of a society that works hard towards the aspirations of a developed nation.

Any action by the government to supposedly safeguard national interests, must have clear and logical explanations for such a move and not come with wishy washy reasons that insult the people's intelligence.

So far, our government has performed miserably and disappointingly inasmuch as certain aspects of religious tolerance and freedom are concerned. What currently exists are just outward appearances of a multi-religious nation but not in essence or strength.

A modern society with the capacity for knowledge and understanding has the sound ability to decide and select its own religious inclinations or abstain from it without any outside help or interference. The government cannot just claim to be tolerant and fair and then use stringent and questionable tactics to implement its authority. Actions speak louder than words!

The PM may have good intentions in his 1Malaysia ideas but the machinery he controls seems to move on its own in different directions according to its whims and fancies, thus totally destroying a dynamic framework for uniting a varied nation.

With no concerted effort and supervision at the helm, 1Malaysia is bound to move aimlessly and eventually, doomed to collapse and fail. Regrettably, the PM seems to let others do the talking and make the decisions, rather than be assertive on matters of great national importance.

Democratic principles of governance must always be upheld, not abused or used to create insecurity and confusion. Currently, there appears to be an alarming and frightening state of affairs where tolerance is for all the wrong and destructive reasons.

If the PM cannot perform his duties as it is expected of him, he should gracefully relinquish his post before more blunders are committed. A change of government would be a better and a refreshing choice.
