Cyberattacks: Meant to stop people from getting truth

The Selangor government is appalled at the DDOS (distributed denial of service) cyberattacks that have recently brought down independent media sites The Sarawak Report and Malaysiakini .

The cowardly actions of the perpetrators this close to election day reflect a deep insecurity about the upcoming results of the Sarawak elections.

These attacks can only mean that parties sympathetic to BN greatly fear the spread of the truth - truth that will hasten the impending departure of Taib Mahmud and his corrupt government.

This is exactly the same suppression of the groundswell of a popular uprising and the use of the internet to ignite a people's movement that was seen in the Middle East revolutions.

We are also disappointed with the lack of action by agencies such as the MCMC and police, who have otherwise been quick to act on baseless cases involving individuals and parties critical of the BN regime.

The MCMC should instead adopt a neutral approach and investigate these attacks immediately.

The Selangor government remains fully committed to the principles of transparency and freedom of information, as demonstrated by the Freedom of Information enactment that was passed in the last Dewan Negeri sitting.

We believe citizens should always be free to express their opinions peacefully and that everyone has a right to free and fair information and views.

Pakatan Rakyat will continue to make integrity, freedom and good governance the hallmark of its government in Selangor and Insya'Allah in Sarawak after the elections.

ABDUL KHALID IBRAHIM is the Menteri Besar of Selangor.
