NFC: Gov't must not tolerate fraud and misuse of funds

The National Feedlot Corporation chief is trying his best to to project the company as of one of legitimacy and sans of wrongdoing with the ample support of the powers-that-be.

However what has been exposed of its sinister activities cannot be ignored.

Political power seems to be a guaranteed license to secure favoritism and opportunities to amass wealth and power beyond the norms of a civil society.

This is quite prominent in the third world countries including Malaysia, which is striving to project itself as a fast developing economic powerhouse.

Yet the country also condones and encourages corporate fraudulent activities of those who are closely aligned to the ruling government.

Thanks to the independent news media for highlighting the issues of a dubious and sinister nature that has for so long, been completely camouflaged and kept out of the public's knowledge or access.

Corruption has always been viewed as a destructive force that can even reduce countries with immense natural resources to just 'beggar' countries due to the siphoning of wealth for personal gains while the majority of the people live in abject poverty.

At the rate the Malaysian government is spending, but also allowing room for abuse of funds allocated for important infrastructure and community development, it will be of little surprise if we also fall into the ranks of such unfortunate and desperate countries which have to depend heavily on aid from charitable and humanitarian agencies.

It is a stark reality that the world is depleting its natural resources very rapidly which cannot be replenished. Thus big and powerful countries are looking to develop poor and desolate countries but at a very high price.

Uncontrolled and unmonitored activities of fraud and misuse of funds is connected to the broader objective of staying in power for the short term at whatever cost and without consideration for the future wellbeing of the country.

When the government officials given the mandate by the people cannot give proper and logical reasons for not taking action against any wrongdoing, it only damages their reputation.

Those in power fail to see the broader perspective of their own position. However the opposition and the public are the watchdogs of their performance for future retention or rejection.

If these people in power still think their continued rule is well secured, they need to rethink and redevelop themselves as a people's government and not operate without regard for the concerns and demands of the people who put them in power.

Giving handouts and stipends is not going to help but only shows a desperation to regain past glory.

The answer is that the government should be a responsive and sincerely caring one and not one that treats every reported case of criminal breach of trust as the opposition's tool for political mileage.

Only the Malaysian Chinese Association (MCA) seems to make some noise and make a slight antbite of concern to question some issues of grave importance to the general public while others choose to remain silent just to safeguard their own positions.

The next general election will definitely set the course for our future.

The choices we make should not only be about short term benefits, but in the long term, for our future generations who need us to protect, not destroy, the country and the economy.

The decisions we make should be for the betterment of all and not for the benefit of certain individuals.
