As Malaysian students in Beijing, we have always been deeply concerned about the social changes of our nation.
Regarding the various news and commentaries made after the 13th general election in Malaysia, we jointly sign this open letter to express our views and expectations on the recent social situation in Malaysia.
1) We hope that candidates or citizens who possess evidence of electoral fraud take practical actions by providing strong evidence to Bersih's 'People's Tribunal' so that thorough investigations can be carried out, or by petitioning the court for electoral actions in order to review possible malpractices during the electoral process which might have biased the election results, so as to ensure that the people possess a just election result.
2) We hope to review and reform the current electoral system in Malaysia in order to perfect our nation's democratic system.
This election has allowed the people to recognise some problems that exist in our nation's electoral system, for example, confusion in electoral rolls, ineffectiveness of the indelible ink, gerrymandering, etc.
Reforms of such aspects are not to be delayed, so that the electoral environment of our nation becomes healthier and more mature.
3) We urge politicians not to make irresponsible remarks, not to provoke and toy with ethnic sentiments. Since this election, we have seen a significant advancement in overall civic awareness throughout the nation.
We hope that all citizens maintain this sincere and respectful attitude, cautiously verifying information, avoiding overreaction, and maintaining vigilance at all times to prevent public leaders from jeopardising the people's interests as well as national interests in favor of their own.
The world is changing rapidly, and the development of our nation is at a critical moment.
Therefore, we hope that all Malaysians, regardless of our race and social backgrounds, get to continue deepening our mutual understanding of each other and abandon the narrow, stereotypical understanding that exists, so that we may properly use our civil rights, to strive for a genuine vision of coexistence.
Signed by 122 students from various universities in Beijing.
