Much of the heat generated over the use of English in Science and Mathematics is unnecessary and yet can be a threat to the peace and goodwill in our country. Everyone agrees that the standard of English needs to be improved and that we need to keep up with advances in Maths and Science.

However all the parties need to discuss the implementation rationally without the unjustified suspicions that the character of vernacular schools would be affected and the unwarranted accusations that anyone opposing the government's proposal is an extremist.

Since Maths and Science in primary schools do not involve many technical terms, they can continue to be taught in Malay, Chinese or Tamil depending on the school's choice. Extra English lessons can be arranged to upgrade the standard of English generally.

From Form One onwards, Maths and Science can be taught in English in all schools. This plan would not only be more effective from the educational perspective but would also be acceptable by all parties, transcending all political and racial affiliations.
