It is far from fair and reasonable for the authorities concerned to take such a drastic action against malaysiakini. The incident would not have happened if they genuinely subscribe to the basic concept of democracy, and have the freedom of the press in the country at heart.

It comes as no surprise that such action was taken almost at lightning speed after Umno Youth lodged the complaint.

Similar cases abound in the past few years. Whenever anyone speaks out for human rights and democracy, one can almost be sure the powers that be will react.

One cannot help but conclude that the powers that be are out to kill free and independent mass media to pave the way for a sweeping victory in the coming general election, which may be held any time this year.

Who is to blame if one forms the opinion that the ruling authorities intend to entrench themselves in the seat of power to the exclusion of others?
