I refer to the letter by Marissa Dell, which attacked both of malaysiakini columnists, Farish A Noor and Fathi A Omar.

Although Ms Dell is free to disagree with anything said by any writer whether in malaysiakini or any of the mainstream newspapers, it does little justice when the criticisms levelled upon them are personal and frankly, below the belt.

There is no doubt that both Farish and Fathi are vital members and participants of the democratic movement in Malaysia - their critique of opposition parties and the reformasi movement is aimed at jolting some much-needed common sense and perspective back into them, however blunt they may be.

However, oppositionists and reformists have thin-skins, just like the ruling parties. Throw a bit of critique at them and they yell blue-murder. It's no wonder that the reformasi movement has petered to the state that it is in now, simply because they have not addressed the issues raised by both the columnists - as well as other members of the intellectual community who may still have some sympathy for the movement - that is important for the growth of democracy in Malaysia.

Reformasi is a part, or a phase, of the democratic movement that many hold dear. But if the cause fails to deliver or live up to the expectations of the people, then it is inevitable that it will fall from grace, and another new cause will take its place.

Shooting messengers is not exactly prudent, no matter how unpleasant the news may be. It defeats the purpose of avoiding mistakes and moving forward. For the record, both Farish and Fathi have made enormous sacrifices for their association with the reform movement and for many of their stands that they hold up to this day. Many, like myself, are grateful for their weekly insights.
