To say Indian Malaysian youths are involved in gangsterism is to utter a platitude. The violent manifestation of this social menace is too apparent for anyone to refute. Yayasan Strategik Sosial (YSS) under the leadership of Dr Denison Jayasooria, which is also an appendage of MIC, has been trying its best to resolve or minimise this social disease that has found its way into the Indian community.

The intention of YSS to find a solution to this worsening problem is definitely noble. However, its ability to succeed is highly questionable, because it is the parent body that call the shots - that is MIC, and its boss Umno, both are undoubtedly seen to suffer from the problem of political immorality.

With this alleged corrupt culture, with essential virtues lacking miserably, it will be rather paradoxical for MIC to be the model or the example for the Indian youths. On the contrary, there is convincing evidence that MIC itself is directly or indirectly engaged in "gunda politics" which is another version of gangsterism in action.

These contradictory situation in MIC will not provide the moral courage or the spirit of virtue to enable YSS to execute in noble intentions to eradicate the evils of gangsterism.

The only option is, first to refine MIC's organisational culture, eliminate its morally decadent image and purify itself from the social defilements. Only then it can regain its lost respect and be in a more effective position to wage a war against gangsterism. Millions have been allocated to YSS to improve the social condition of the Indians, but of what avail if the dynamic force of example is seriously lacking in MIC's own operating philosophy.
