For the good of all, I hope that no action will be taken against malaysiakini . Perhaps a rap on the knuckles should be sufficient to appease some ruffled feathers.
Malaysiakini has come a long way as an 'alternative' news provider and its letters forum has managed to tap the pulse of the 'reading' public. It has cleverly managed to highlight the concerns of both pro- and anti-government readers and given them a useful outlet to let off steam and express their concerns.
The government of the day should grasp this opportunity to engage and even resonate with these readers and address these issues, if of course there is the desire to improve and remain relevant. After all, some of us are just happy to be able to watch Linkin Park live in concert!
This is a good test for the 'new' leadership, where instead of the predictable knee-jerk reactions to any 'sensitive' matter, perhaps we can see the dawn of a new era of press freedom and a government that is open and willing to listen.
What we definitely do not need now is more high-handedness and punishment on trumped up charges, just for being critical.
