I read with aghast PAS' blueprint to turn Malaysia into an Islamic state. I would like to state that the plan is not workable in a modern society as ours. There will no more be uniformity of the law. It would be ridiculous to have one section of the population being governed by one set of laws and another section by another set.

Even though PAS president Abdul Hadi Awang said that the non-Muslims can choose between the syariah or civil law, non-Muslims will still at some point be bound by the syariah.

For a multiracial country, lawmakers have to be and have been sensitive towards its people, their needs and beliefs, and should keep from imposing rules that do not coincide with their religious teachings, beliefs and practices.

The federal constitution was not only meant to govern individuals, but also to regulate the way in which the legislative, executive and judicial bodies work. A change now, will threaten the very foundation from which these bodies derive their powers and to a large extent would defeat the spirit on which the federal constitution was enacted.

I have noted that PAS president Abdul Hadi has said in a question-and-answer session that: "Muslims who have been punished according to hudud will not be cast into hell in their hereafter. Those who have not been punished by hudud, they will be sent to hell despite being punished under laws that are non-hudud."

It is indeed shocking to hear a leader who aspires to form the government say this. The deciding factor of whether a person goes to heaven or hell is a non-issue here, simply because morality is not a deciding factor when adjudging where laws are breached. Laws are meant to make offences clear, and any infringement will hold the person liable for their misconduct.

Abdul Hadi also said: "Muslims will be totally subjected to Islamic law while non-Muslims will be subjected to laws of their own religion." Is he now trying to say that laws in every religion will be enacted to regulate people of that particular religion?

While it is obvious that PAS have come up with their blueprint, they haven't had the slightest idea of how to implement it and to regulate the people of Malaysia who comprise of various ethnicity and religion.
