I passed the relevant section of the New Klang Valley Expressway (NKVE) approximately 25 minutes before the massive rockslide and thank my lucky stars that I (and apparently no one else) was caught in it.

I noticed the unusual presence of the PLUS maintenance crew on the roadside but a rockfall from the apparently massive granite wall was the last thing on my mind for their presence. There was certainly no warning of any sort and if I had known of the danger, I would have taken an alternative route and not paid toll!

Thinking back, it gives me the shudders to think what might have happened if I was delayed or if the fall had started earlier than 7.16am when it was dark or days later when the holiday traffic packs the NKVE. From all accounts, the massive rockfall was not expected and luck played a big part in preventing casualties and further disasters.

I agree that the minister and authorities/company- in-charge have to be questioned about the decision on keeping the NKVE open after the reported early warning signs since Sunday. The initial reasons given for the rockfall, i.e. accumulation of excessive water at the top of the slope and 'persistent rains' are tired ones heard to account for similar local disasters previously. Have we not learnt from them?

We have reliable weather reports nowadays and certainly the heavy rains were predicted. Was there any effort to drain the 'excessive water or any additional/improved maintenance for the sensitive areas?

I believe that section of the NKVE was built by a Taiwanese company or at least had Taiwanese engineers. What did they recommend for maintenance of the slopes? What did the PLUS engineers concerned say about the condition of the slopes after the 'early warnings' and recommend? Were other professional engineers and experts consulted? The public should be told of the basis of the decision or the competence of our engineers could be questioned.

Lastly, although it may be too late for any unfortunate ones caught in future incidents, can anyone enlighten me on the liabilities of PLUS or other companies which collect toll on similar or other engineering defects of their expressways?
