Everybody seems to be jumping onto the bandwagon condemning the Americans for saying that Malaysian laws and policies discriminate against certain religions. While there is religious freedom in this country, our country is also known to discriminate on the following:
-Build mosques using money from government coffers, while other religious buildings are paid for by devotees.
-Provide Muslim civil servants with special leave to perform the Haj while non-Muslims do not enjoy similar leave for their religious obligations.
-Tithes paid by Muslims are deductible from their income tax payable, whereas donations by non-Muslims to their religious bodies are given only tax exemption at the most.
I can go on and on but anybody with a clear head should be able to see what I mean. We do have much greater religious freedom than many other countries that I can think of. I would suggest to anybody who wants to comment on the American report to read it carefully. Religious freedom is not religious equality.
