I am a Malaysian Muslim living in the US since 1995. I have read with interest letters on the subject of religious freedom, or lack thereof, here in the US and in Malaysia. I would like to offer my views on religious freedom in the US, especially after the Sept 11 tragedy.

It is true that some Muslims were unfairly treated following the event, but at least they had access to the legal system and there were groups in the country that come forward to defend them.

Beyond that, things have been normal as far as being able to practice one's religion. Mosques continue to be filled with worshippers and daily religious programs proceed without interruptions. New mosques and Islamic schools are being built. People are free to pray and indulge in other activities without fear as long as no laws are broken.

I have to mention here that at the height of Sept 11, our mosques were protected by non-Muslim neighbours against possible attacks by irresponsible people. They came in droves to offer support and to make sure that we can pray inside in peace. There were regular inter-faith meetings and dialogues.

This clearly moved me and showed that even in today's uncertainties and the kind of world we live in, people of different faiths can still co-exist and help make this world a better place.
