I refer to Malaysian Taxpayer's comments on unequal government treatment to the different denominations in the country. The Malaysian constitution provides that Islam is the official religion. Being the official religion, it carries certain privileges which have been sanctimoniously agreed by the founding fathers. I believe that a responsible government must adhere to those guidelines.

I do not profess to be a constitutional expert but as a man on the street, especially in this multiracial country, one should not question issues which have long been decided since achieving independence. Should we allow ourselves to dwell on these issues, it would be endless and we will end up with catastrophe.

As a Malay, I am not pleased with the government of today who, in my opinion, has acceded so much to the demands of the non-Malays in order to win votes in the general election. As a selfish inconsiderate Malay, I am not pleased that the government is also providing assistance in building temples or other types of worships, but to be a responsible citizen I have to accept the fact that this is multiracial country. At the end, no one community shall be fully satisfied.

There are myriad of issues that the Malays are not pleased with, but there is a limit that one, as a responsible citizen of this beloved country, may question. This country does not provide the

'utopia' that one longs for, but many of my friends are considers Malaysia a heaven on earth. My trips to China and India confirms this without any reservation.

I am reminded of the dilapidated mosque in India that is surviving on donation, the decaying old mosque of Beijing kept standing by visitors' donations, a tiny mosque whose neighbour is a degrading sex shop in Wien, a mosque in Dublin which was formerly an unused church, a very nave looking mosque opposite a nude club in Perth, and many more I have seen in Amsterdam, UK, Johannesburg, Cape Town, Christchurch, Melbourne, Rome, Copenhagen, Bergen, Genevre, Firenze, Munchen, San Francisco, Reno - all of them in pitiful state having no government financial assistance. Should the Muslims there complain to say that the government is unfair not practising religious equality?
