I too, am amused by the latest attack by our tourism minister on AirAsia. I find his comments ridiculous especially when he accused AirAsia of misleading consumers and not helping the tourism industry at all.
Instead of attacking AirAsia, I am more than thankful for them as they provide a second alternative for air travel particularly in closing the gap between East Malaysia and West Malaysia. Outstation students have much to thank AirAsia for providing cheaper service.
Touching on misleading advertisements, I've never felt cheated at all as AirAsia has clearly stated "prices from" which indicates that price may increase depending on demand. If our minister fails to understand such simple English, I'm beginning to doubt his credibility in promoting our tourism industry.
When the minister accuses AirAsia of not helping the local tourism at all, I would like to highlight myself as an example. Previously when MAS was the only carrier between KL and Sarawak, I only managed to fly home twice a year due to its overpriced tickets. With AirAsia, I've managed to travel back to my hometown five times last year.
With cheaper air travel, more Malaysians can get the opportunity to explore other exotic places in our beautiful country which was previously limited by expensive air travel. Just for your information, I've stopped flying MAS since AirAsia provided new routes to Sarawak. With that, I do not comprehend how our tourism minister could come out with such remarks.
I view his recent attack as a defence for MAS. Instead of scrutinising AirAsia, perhaps he should take a better look at MAS for its over-expensive air fare and security issues. The established MAS has bigger issues to solve instead of bullying a newbie like AirAsia.
