I refer to Sri Arjuna Dewata's ' KLIA's never ending woes ' and would like to add that one cannot blame the management alone for the bad situation in KLIA. To begin with, who had any say in the development of the airport? It was none other than former prime minister Dr Mahathir Mohamad.

That's why we had a Japanese architect and a Japanese baggage system that cost a whopping RM750 million. I am quite sure that there was no open tender for the job. This is not the first time the baggage delivery system has failed and we need to spend more money to upgrade it.

Design-wise, there is no place in KLIA for taxis to queue up for passengers, and the gloomy atmosphere greeting visitors waiting for taxis is a result of poor lighting. Other people use carpets indoors, but we tried to do one better, by using granite for the floors. It is not only expensive, but is also hard on the feet and noisy. It gives a very 'cold' atmosphere. We also have lots of glass walls and high ceilings, thus incurring unnecessary high air-conditioning costs.

As for the management, I agree with Sri Arjuna that it leaves a lot to be desired. To make matters worse, the revenue from operations is not enough to cover expenses, and that is why maintenance is bad. Many of the staff work like government officers and that is why until today we still have touts. Any complaints will be met with: "please submit your complaint in writing".

The chaos outside the terminal is perpetual, as those who are supposed to wait, park their cars along the roads. And to top it all, there are those so-called VIPs who use the taxi lane and park there. No one dares to book them. Should a policemen take action, chances are he would be reprimanded by his boss instead for embarrassing a VIP.

As usual we went for form rather than function, and now we all are paying the price.
