After much publicity by the media on the new launch of Gen.2 by Proton, I was indeed impressed by what I read. At the same time, I was scouting a new car for my daughter and happened to drop by the showroom at Sri Hartamas near Mount Kiara.

When I arrived at about 3pm, there was a crowd gathered around the newly-launched Gen.2.

Initially, I was impressed with the sleek design. However, upon closer inspection, I was sad to see that the car is indeed not roadworthy as far as safety is concerned.

Firstly, the car at the showroom had its rear right door jammed and could not be opened.

Secondly, the left rear door could not be closed because the rubber upholstery skirting around the door frames came off.

Thirdly, the sidedoors looked so fragile that when you knock on them with your finger, you can hear that they are real hollow. I do not see how the car can survive any side impact.

Fourthly, no air bags have been incorporated.

To my dismay, when I questioned the sales personnel about the many flaws, the answer was simple. This is Proton.

I will certainly not buy one and I believe those who really have a second look at the car will feel the same.
