As an ordinary citizen without party affiliation, I feel that the current anti-corruption drive and attempts to reform the police is very positive and encouraging.
I think credit must not only be given to the new premier Abdullah Ahmad Badawi, but, more importantly, to the opposition parties and reformasi movement for mounting or exerting enough pressure on the government in the past few years.
As all ordinary citizens know in private for many long years, corruption in high places and abuses of police powers have always been rampant. But what could we do, given the facts that the media is controlled and the police is one of the self-interested parties?
Also, we cannot trust ruling politicians, be they in Umno, MCA, MIC or other component parties of the Barisan Nasional to channel our concerns and disgust because we are not sure if they are also self-interested parties in the schemes of things. MCA is even worse because its image is still tainted by reported association to triads and corrupt businessmen popularly believed to be linked to "the top".
That Abdullah is a good man does not necessarily mean others in the ruling parties are good. On the contrary, there are still many corrupt and crooked ones in Umno, MCA, MIC and other parties.
Thanks to Anwar Ibrahim who dared to first warn us from inside. He has sacrificed himself for us because of his love for the country and people. Thanks also to opposition leaders like Lim Kit Siang, Lim Guan Eng, Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail, Dr Syed Husin Ali, Tian Chua, Mohd Ezam Mohd Nor, Azmin Ali, R Sivarasa and many, many other opposition members and activists who dare to stand up to fight for us ordinary Malaysians.
They have given voice to the voiceless like me. Their spirits have inspired us to speak up. I strongly believe that without their struggle, the government would have still slumbered in corruption and decadence.
I hope opposition leaders, members and activists would continue to expose more cases, and mount pressure on the government to cleanse itself. I also hope that more Malaysians would appreciate the struggle of these brave men and women by giving their parties stronger representation in the parliament and state assemblies to give constructive criticisms and feedback to the prime minister to continue the good fight against corruption and decadence in our beloved country.
I also urge Abdullah to release Anwar now so that the country will be reconciled and united again. The man is innocent and has suffered enough.
Would you not join me in prayer to ask God to continue to protect Anwar's body and soul? Let good triumph over evil in this blessed land of ours.
