I am not an Anwar Ibrahim worshipper nor admirer. As his contemporary in university, I understand his political and philosophical idealism, and have been following the twists and turns of his career as a fighter, preacher and leader.
After a lot of pondering, I have to say that it is now time to say "enough is enough". Anwar is now a wounded and sickly tiger. It is now the time to set him free and let him go once and for all!
It is not right to make a martyr and a personality cult out of him. Give what is due to him in terms of his medical care and financial benefits as our former leader. There are times when we must show kindness and compassion especially to those who have contributed to our country.
The court must not be turned into an arena for political or personal vendetta. We must maintain its independence and keep it above politics. Let it be a place where individual and public rights are preserved, protected, upheld and remedied whenever there are breaches. Let it also be a place where kindness, compassion and forgiveness is shown.
A conscientious leader is always one that is guided by the fundamental principle of moderation and fairness that is constructed on wisdom. We must be able to discern between being punitive and vindictive.
Politicians in playing their dirty games would resort to the uncanny art of survival by being opportunistic and would grip the first opportunity to over kill their opponents. They would resort to intimidation, rhetoric and invoke sentiments of the unsuspecting common people to garner their support and thereby sustain their curse on their enemies and detractors.
This also refers to the present campaign against corruption. Yes, we must restore honesty and create a new breed of responsible and respectable people among our leadership and the common people at large. Those who are corrupt must be punished especially when they are holding public trust and in a position of power. All cases must be diligently investigated and brought to court for judgement.
Here again, we must make sure that no one is being opportunistic or vindictive. Just let the process runs through naturally without unnecessary intervention apart from ensuring its efficiency and transparency.
We hope this exercise in clearing up backlog of legacy issues left by Dr Mahathir Mohamad would not take too much of Pak Lah's time and could be dispose off expeditiously. I was told that those who continue to grabble with the past will miss the future.
