It is interesting to note the Malay translation of 'Five reasons for supporting Keadilan', which I came across in the Freeanwar
website. The second paragraph states: "...equal rights for all Malaysians, irrespective of race and religion ... affirmative action for the hardcore poor...". In the online Malay version, this was translated (and summarised?) as " ...persamaan hak dan membela yang miskin ".
I hope that the omission of "irrespective of race and religion" is just an oversight rather than a subtle form of deception. Forgive me for being suspicious but the party's actions with regards to its alliance (subservience?) to PAS seem to contradict "equal rights for all Malaysians...".
PAS is bent on implementing a special set of apartheid-like laws for us Malay/Muslims. Yet, Keadilan, the party which we disillusioned Umno supporters in 1998 placed our hopes in, did not oppose the hudud laws of Terengganu, which was a form of segregation.
What is Keadilan's stand on other issues like the Mariah Carey concert, Malay participation in beauty contests and parading in swimsuits on stage in public, or bikini-clad Malay girls on public beaches and other "unIslamic" issues?
Does Keadilan respect the rights of the Malays/Muslims enough to approve the behaviours mentioned above, and many others not mentioned here?
Although I have broken-heartedly given up my formerly staunch support for Keadilan, firm and committed stands by the party leaders on such issues might yet rekindle the hopes we once had for Keadilan as a truly liberal and democratic alternative to Barisan Nasional.
