With reference to Mustapha Ong's letter Election over, time to move on , I must say that this BN apologist simply doesn't get it.
A democracy is not just about voting or majority rule. It is about justice. It is about knowing right from wrong. How then can any right minded person ignore allegations of fraud in our electoral process? Indeed, how can any sane person 'move on' under the weight of these allegations?
Firstly, to let bygones be bygones as Mr Ong suggests is clearly to fail in our responsibilities. Fraud is a crime. It is the duty of government to fight crime and enforce just law. Instead, Mr Ong calls on the newly formed Malaysian government to abdicate its responsibilities in enforcing the law. Instead, Mr Ong calls for the government to ignore this malfeasance and allow it to fester just as the former prime minister turned a blind eye to corruption and allowed it to fester.
Is Abdullah Ahmad Badawi sure that this is the way he wants to begin his prime ministership? Now, this writer is not in a position to say if or not electoral fraud was committed. But the allegations of fraud at the very least necessitate an investigation.
And if the allegations are true, new elections must be held. If the allegations are true, the Election Commission and those responsible must be brought to book. That is the law. That is justice. That is democracy.
Aside from the questions of law and justice, there is also the question of credibility. While no one will argue that the prime minister's mandate is invalid, the existence of fraud, if not investigated, will certainly give rise to concerns about the basic honesty of this government.
And I for one do not want a dishonest man as my prime minister. I therefore call on 'Mr Clean' to show us all that you are worthy of this name. Clean up this country. Start with the EC.
