I refer to Michael Ng's letter Why ban parliament live telecasts?
I am in total agreement with Michael's argument and I do not see why the authorities are so adamant and reluctant to telecast the parliament sessions. After our parliament is called Dewan Rakyat and certainly the rakyat has every right to be informed.
In selecting the candidates for the GE2004, our PM, Pak Lah has mentioned that each of the elected representative will be given a report card to chart their achievements or otherwise.
What better way to monitor their achievements than to allow the rakyat the full opportunity to see their elected representatives in action (or inaction?).
The authorities should have no worries about such telecasts because it will function like a double-edge knife for both the government and opposition MPs.
If the opposition MPs are not performing and behave in an unruly manner, it will be telecast as well. Isn't that great?
I hope the authorities will seriously consider broadcasting the parliament sessions live. About the costs? Come on, we were not born yesterday.
More money (in fact, billions) has been spent on other things of lesser importance. Believe me, this money of the rakyat will be well spent on live parliament telecasts.
In the final analysis, the decision on whether parliament will go live or otherwise will demonstrate whether Pak Lah mean business or it is just another one of those political rhetoric .
